It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey
Synopsis: Piper Bellinger’s step-father has reached the end of his tether. LA socialite and Instagram Influencer, Piper has thrown her last party, been bailed out for the last time by her sister. Now, he’s sending them both to live in a small fishing village, Westport, to learn how to look after themselves. Piper and her sister have been in Westport for approximately five minutes when they have a run in with surly fisherman, Brendan Taggart. The party girl and the grumpy ship captain could not be more different, but despite their differences the spark between them is clear for everyone to see.
Nikki says: For someone who hadn’t read any romances before this year, I sure seem to be dishing out a lot of four and five star reviews for them! This one has been my favourite yet though. It was everything I could have asked for from a contemporary romance, the sexual tension, the spice… Brendan.
At first I wasn’t sure about how far I’d get with this book. I’m not a fan of ‘celebrity’ and Piper is definitely that when the story begins. She’s a stereotypical, airheaded party girl. There didn’t seem to be any substance to her at all. But when she and her sister, Hannah arrived in the sleepy fishing village, Westport it didn’t take long for her character to start to develop and me to start to warm to her.
I enjoyed the dual POV in the book too. I’m a bit of a sucker for reading the male character’s point of view and Brendan did not disappoint. On the surface he’s the archetypal grumpy fisherman, set in his ways, but thanks to the dual POV we get to see the way the true extent of Piper’s effect on the Captian. So much tension, just enough angst and then the spice… oh bouy (sorry).
I don’t feel like any of these words have even come close to expressing how much I loved this book. Just read it. You won’t be disappointed.
Hook, Line and Sinker the ‘sort of sequel’ following Piper’s sister, Hannah, is out now.
